Billions of profits for the FIFA – nothing for South Africa.
We ask FIFA to actively engage against exploitation and for the enforcement of basic human rights in the context of FIFA World Cups.
Fair working conditions for construction workers and staff during the World Cup. Companies with huge construction contracts for FIFA stadiums must pay fair wages and salaries.
Many South African workers are barely able to feed their families on the salaries paid by FIFA and its contractors.
No demolition of impoverished areas and shantytowns. No to the sorry tradition of forced displacements of thousands of people to polish the host city's image.
Displaced people in Durban continue to wait for new housing with adequate facilities such as drinking water and sanitary installations.
Unrestricted freedom of the press during the World Cup: journalists must be able to report freely on the World Cup. In South Africa, FIFA attempted to impose a clause that "news organisations cannot harm the reputation of the World Cup."
Dashed hopes
In spite of economic growth around a million jobs have been lost since the end of apartheid – as well as an additional 800,000 during the current financial and economic crisis. 20 million people in South Africa live in poverty. In this context, hopes had been raised with the investment of billions of Euros for the World Cup. The World Championship has indeed triggered a downright construction boom – city centres are brightly polished and FIFA is counting on a benefit of over two billion Swiss francs (1.4 bln. Euros).
But the chance has been missed. Slums have been razed to the ground, construction workers have built stadiums for famine wages, hawkers are being driven off and are thus being deprived of their opportunities for income. FIFA could be pulling the strings in effecting improvements in the World Cup host countries – by insisting on compliance with human rights, fair working conditions and minimum wages that secure the worker’s existence.
South Africa in numbers:
Costs for the World Cup in South Africa: 4.5 billion Swiss francs
Expected benefit for FIFA: 2 billion Swiss francs
South African population: 47 million
People living in poverty: 20 million
Poverty line: 4500 Rand per month (CHF 650)
Wage of a construction worker for World Cup stadiums: 3000 Rand
Life expectancy today: 51 years
Life expectancy 20 years ago: 62 years
